Use Claude with Microsoft 365

The objective is to connect Claude to Microsoft 365 content and workflows with control. The review baseline covers connector permissions, data classes, storage, drafts and human approval.

WERKVERSTAND / CONNECTING INTELLIGENCE

The essential answer

The Claude Microsoft 365 connector uses a work account in a Microsoft Entra tenant. After administrative setup and personal sign-in, it can reach permitted content. Write tools require separate enablement. Assess their data path and boundaries independently of Copilot.

01 / FIT

A good fit when

  • A concrete assignment and an accountable domain owner are defined.
  • A bounded test establishes which Microsoft 365 content is accessible, where the result is stored and where a person approves further use. Excluded content remains excluded.

02 / LIMITS

Not the first choice when

  • Avoid: treating Copilot and Claude permissions or data commitments as equivalent. If connector permissions, data commitments or storage destinations are inferred solely from another provider integration, the review baseline for this workflow is missing.

Use the right account and administrative setup

A personal Outlook or Hotmail account is not sufficient for this connector. Anthropic describes a Microsoft 365 work account with an Entra tenant and administrative consent before personal connection. Team and Enterprise also require enablement by the Claude organisation. Establish these prerequisites before planning a business pilot.

Review user permissions and write tools separately

The connector uses delegated permissions, so existing oversharing remains a separate issue. Assess reading and analysis separately from enabled write tools. The documented email write tools currently do not support attachments. For each operation, record destination, identity and acceptance; claims from a Copilot configuration do not automatically apply.

Test a project briefing with two roles

Choose approved project documents and create an internal status draft with references. Review it with the project lead. Repeat the test with a role that must not see certain documents. Add external email or file modification only as a separate test. This reveals both professional quality and the access actually permitted.
