ChatGPT Work: turn information into usable work

Describe an outcome, not a topic

The official introduction distinguishes short chat responses from larger Work assignments with usable outputs. Our suggested starting brief is: “Turn these three approved monthly summaries into a two-page decision memo with variances, sources and open questions.” This makes completion assessable.

Add the audience, output format, required template and decisions the deliverable should support. Explicitly identify which figures may be recalculated and which values must be preserved from the source.

Choose local or cloud work deliberately

Local Work tasks can use approved files, apps and browser sessions on the computer. Cloud work does not automatically inherit local sign-ins or access to a company network. “Local” describes where tools execute; it is not a blanket promise that all processing stays offline.

Keep the source set focused and reliable

For the first test, a current summary with clear column definitions is better than a disorganized archive. Provide an authoritative version and state known gaps. If versions conflict, ask Work to list them and let the responsible person decide which version applies.

For connected apps, check the actual account as well as the installation. A shared connection can have different source permissions from the person starting the task. Data access therefore needs to be traceable for the specific workflow.

How to review the decision memo

Open the actual deliverable and inspect points that could change a decision: totals, periods, outliers and unsupported explanations. A polished slide is useful only when its message follows from the approved data. Measure how long review and subsequent correction take.

• Check figures against the original source, not another AI summary.
• Keep assumptions visible and distinguish conclusions from facts.
• Save the accepted version in an unambiguous destination.
