What the Windows app adds
The new app brings Gemini to the PC as a dedicated workspace. Alt+Space opens it for questions, drafting and brainstorming alongside other applications. Google also lists Gmail and Drive connections, image generation and research among its uses. Those examples describe product capabilities; they do not establish automatic access to every file open locally. A clear instruction is especially helpful in a team: which information is supplied, which source is connected and what result is expected? A shorter route to assistance improves convenience, but does not by itself configure an entire business process.
Check installation and account first
The help page specifies Windows 10 or later, at least 8 GB RAM, 200 MB of free space and a stable internet connection. It supports a personal Google account or a work or school account with Gemini enabled. On company devices, installation, updates and account use should fit existing IT processes. A personal account on a work computer remains personal; installing an app does not change its contractual basis. Before the first real task, verify the signed-in user and whether the required Google services are available to that exact identity.
Existing Workspace controls still apply
Google describes the app as enabled by default for organisations that already have Gemini enabled. Access and related tools remain subject to existing generative-AI settings in the Admin console. This does not grant blanket access to company files. Roles, sharing permissions and the connections used remain decisive. Test an ordinary employee account rather than relying only on an administrator’s account. Include a document that the role should not access as a negative test. Also record which history and data rules apply to the selected surface instead of inferring them from the desktop app’s name.
Example: make a proposal easier to understand
An employee supplies an approved, anonymised section of a proposal and asks Gemini to make it clearer. The instruction specifies audience, tone and facts that must remain unchanged: prices, scope and deadlines. Compare the result with the original before returning it to the document. This first workflow requires no broad system connections. If it proves useful, a second pilot can test briefings drawn from permitted Drive documents. Separate established facts, open questions and suggestions. A wording improvement must not silently create new commitments, alter the agreed scope or make an uncertain statement sound confirmed.
Do not equate Windows access with Spark
The Windows release establishes access to the Gemini desktop app. It does not establish that every Mac feature or Gemini Spark agent capability is available on Windows. Current Spark help lists web, mobile and Mac with additional account and regional restrictions; Germany is currently excluded there. Image generation is also a separate capability with its own suitability questions. A business visual needs explicit editorial approval; access to an image feature does not substantiate a real customer outcome or product characteristic. For your business, the feature inventory should contain capabilities verified on the surface actually being deployed.
Start with a small desktop pilot
Choose two recurring tasks, such as rewriting text and preparing a short source-based briefing. Measure launching, input preparation, rework and transferring the result together. Test a connection failure and a case without an authorised source. An app that opens quickly can still create additional checking work. Record verified capabilities in a short team guide covering the correct account, permitted data, an example instruction and the responsible person. Questions about Gemini for Windows
Do I need Windows 11? No: the help page specifies Windows 10 or later. Does the app work offline? A stable internet connection is among its requirements. Can employees use work accounts? Yes, if their administrator has enabled Gemini. Does this automatically include every agent feature? No; Spark and other features have separate prerequisites. Can I process customer data from the app? Use the approved business account and the rules established for the actual data path. Which shortcut does Google list? Alt+Space. Checking for conflicts with existing desktop shortcuts is part of local rollout.
