Distinguish Fable 5.1 from Mythos 5.1
Anthropic separates generally available Fable from restricted-access Mythos 5.1. They share a model but apply different safeguards. A company should therefore not plan around Mythos access simply because it can use Fable. An SMB pilot starts with the product actually available to the organization and its specific data flow.
Choose the demanding part of the workflow
The model documentation recommends Opus 5 as a starting point for many tasks and Fable 5.1 for more demanding or long-running work. Werkverstand would test the bottleneck first: reconciling conflicting documents, conducting multistep research or making a difficult code change. Routine classification does not automatically need the most expensive model.
An API model switch needs integration testing
Existing integrations need to review forced tool choice and handling of earlier thinking blocks, among other changes. The migration guide documents relevant differences. The practical task is to create a copy of the integration, use anonymized cases, preserve the output contract and make errors observable. Only after acceptance should a bounded share of real work move across.
Measure quality, rework and cost together
A useful sample includes easy cases, the actual bottleneck and deliberately incomplete inputs. Domain reviewers score completeness, correct evidence and required corrections without seeing model names. Record runtime and consumption alongside those scores. A result improves the workflow only when reduced rework outweighs additional expense; a longer answer is not sufficient.
Start with a rollback path
Before switching, assign an owner, a budget, a comparison version and a clear stop condition. Review retention and special contractual conditions for the access route actually used. Vendor benchmarks and advertised savings are not treated as guaranteed outcomes in your business.
Keep it verifiable
