Clarify which Copilot you mean
This comparison concerns GitHub Copilot for software development. Current GitHub documentation distinguishes code review, cloud agent, CLI, SDK and a desktop application, among other surfaces. Microsoft 365 Copilot for office work needs a separate comparison. Execution location, permissions and data flow also vary across GitHub experiences and should not be merged into one blanket product claim.
Test the handoff from task to review
When work already exists as precise GitHub issues, a short path to a reviewable pull request is valuable. For a hard-to-reproduce defect, interactive investigation may matter more. Include both situations in the pilot. The next developer should be able to understand the cause, change and remaining risks from the result.
Combine automated checks with team approval
GitHub describes an isolated environment and automated security checks for its cloud agent. These measures help but do not replace project-specific acceptance. With either product, separately restrict secrets, protected branches and production data. Test whether critical changes are actually stopped before merging, and review newly introduced dependencies.
Decide on review effort
Score the same tasks for correctness, test quality, rework and supervision. Include administration and recurring usage costs. A system that regularly produces larger, unclear changes can add work despite fast execution. A documented pilot is a stronger procurement basis than a single benchmark.
